Studio Art Practice Two
I have returned to what I know. My earliest memory in pre-school was weaving brightly coloured pieces of paper together - this interlacing of elements intrigued me then, and now. I am a woman; this is what I know. I inhabit spaces created especially for women, such as female toilets, in woman's magazines and department stores. I love what I don't yet know. There is a chance element in bringing together two images and seeing what they mean in relationship to one another. This semester took a different direction to what I expected! In the early weeks of this semester I had my pre-school flash back - it was a major revelation! I am an avid reader of white trash magazines filled with beautiful women and photography, so I wove two magazine pages together with the intention of making two negatives a positive. or LOW ART + LOW ART = HIGH ART
So much about the print media intrigues me, but most of all the "throw away" nature of it all. This brings a paradox of sorts to my art practice - my pieces have this ephemeral aspect to them yet the amount of work that has gone into them is so apparent. Bringing the sweat and tears of handicraft to the re-appropriation of magazine images poses such a delicious amount of questions! |
All this incredible creativity was done at Queensland University of Technology.
